In-Game Strategy: Leverage, Bullpen Usage, and Fatigue

How the simulation resolves pitching matchups, bullpen warmup, pinch hitting, and workload — and the strategy settings that actually move wins.

The Strategy screen is where a good roster becomes a good team. This guide covers what the simulation is actually doing pitch to pitch, and which settings change outcomes.

The pitch engine in one paragraph

Every plate appearance resolves pitch by pitch. Pitch selection depends on the pitcher's repertoire, command, the count, the hitter's approach and history in the game, and the umpire behind the plate. Contact quality comes from the batted-ball model — exit profile, park factors, and the defensive alignment behind the pitch. There is no hidden dice roll on "hit or out": the sequence is simulated, and the result falls out of it.

That is why approach settings matter. Telling your lineup to be patient against a pitcher with poor command produces walks, not vibes.

Hitter approach

  • Aggressive: more early-count contact, fewer walks, more weak contact against good command.
  • Balanced: the default; it is correct more often than anything else.
  • Patient: more walks, more strikeouts, punishes pitchers who cannot locate.

Set approach against the opponent's pitching profile, not as a permanent identity.

Bullpen warmup and leverage

Relievers need warmup time. The manager agent begins warming arms based on game state and the roles you assigned, so unassigned roles produce bad sequencing — your best reliever sitting cold while a middle man works the eighth of a tied game.

Leverage drives usage. High-leverage innings should go to your best available arms, which means:

  • Do not use your closer in a four-run game just because it is the ninth.
  • Accept that a great reliever cannot pitch every day; warmup and workload both accumulate.

Fatigue and workload

Fatigue is tracked for pitchers and position players and it has consequences: reduced effectiveness now, elevated injury risk later. Two failure modes to avoid:

  • Rotation abuse: riding four starters through a long stretch. It works for three weeks and costs you September.
  • Catcher burnout: the most commonly ignored workload in the game. Give your starting catcher real rest.

Workload insights flag players trending into risk before the injury lands. Acting on those flags is cheaper than reacting to an injury.

Pinch hitting and defensive substitution

Pinch hitting is a real gain in late close games when the matchup is bad and you have a genuine bat on the bench. It is a loss when it costs you a defensive position you cannot refill legally. Check what your bench actually is before you plan on using it.

Late-inning defensive substitution is underused. Protecting a one-run lead with your best glove behind a ground-ball pitcher is a quiet win.

Small ball: when it is worth it

  • Bunting trades an out for a base. Correct with a weak hitter, a fast runner, and one run needed.
  • Hit and run works with a contact hitter and a runner who can move. It fails badly with a strikeout-prone bat.
  • Intentional walks are situational and rarely optimal; the engine models the downstream matchup, so check who is on deck.

Building a strategy profile that holds up

Set the defaults you would choose in most games, then adjust per series rather than per inning:

  • Approach against the opposing rotation's command profile.
  • Bullpen roles reviewed whenever a reliever's form changes materially.
  • Rest days scheduled ahead of long road stretches, not after the fatigue warning.

Assign bullpen roles, spend high-leverage innings on your best arms, treat fatigue as a forward-looking cost, and adjust approach by series instead of by feel.
