Reading the Live Broadcast: Win Probability, Leverage and Pitch Charts
How to use the live game view — win probability curve, leverage badges, pitch charts and the box score — to understand why a game turned instead of just who won.
The live game view is not decoration. Every number on it is produced by the same deterministic engine that decides the game, which means you can use it to diagnose your club rather than simply watch it.
Win probability is a statement about the rest of the game
The curve tracks the home team's chance of winning after each plate appearance. It combines four things: the score, the innings remaining, the base/out state, and a small home-field edge for last licks. A tie game in the first sits a little above even for the home side for exactly that reason.
What to look for:
- Long flat stretches mean neither side is generating pressure. If your offense produces flat curves game after game, the problem is on-base ability, not power.
- Steep single drops are the plays that actually cost you games. The Turning Point callout names the biggest one.
- Late curves that never recover usually trace back to bullpen usage two innings earlier.
Leverage tells you where to spend your best arms
The leverage badge measures how much a single plate appearance can move the game. 1.0 is an average situation; anything above 1.5 is a spot where the outcome of one at-bat materially decides the result.
The practical rule: your best reliever should be throwing in the highest-leverage inning, not automatically the ninth. A three-run ninth is a lower-leverage inning than a tie-game eighth with runners on. If you keep seeing your closer enter at 0.8 leverage while your fourth-best arm pitched the 1.9 spot, your bullpen roles need work.
Pitch charts show approach, not just results
Each plate appearance records the pitch sequence: type, intent, location in the zone, and whether the hitter swung. Read them in groups rather than one at a time.
- A hitter who chases low and away in every chart has a hole the league will exploit. He is a platoon bat, not an everyday one.
- A pitcher whose chase pitches are being taken has lost the count leverage that makes his strikeout stuff work.
- Repeated sequences to the same hitter mean predictability. The engine's sequencing penalty already discourages it, but a thin pitch mix forces it anyway.
The box score answers the question the curve raises
Once the curve shows you *when* the game turned, the box score tells you *who*. Look at three things in order:
1. Pitch counts against the innings pitched — an efficient starter is worth more than a slightly better one who cannot finish six. 2. Runners left on base — a high number with a healthy on-base line is a sequencing problem, not a talent problem. 3. Relief appearances and the inning each one entered, checked against the leverage you saw live.
Playback controls exist so you can stop and read
Pause, step back, step forward. Use them at the moments the curve moves. Watching a full game at speed teaches you almost nothing; stopping on the three plays that mattered and reading the pitch sequence teaches you what to change.
