Park Factors and Roster Fit: Building a Team for Your Stadium

How stadium dimensions and park factors change the value of every player you sign, and how to build a roster that fits the building you play in 81 times a year.

You play half your games in one building. That building has dimensions, and those dimensions systematically change which players succeed there. Ignoring park factors means overpaying for skills your stadium suppresses and underpaying for skills it rewards. This is one of the largest available edges in Diamond Legend and one of the least used.

What a park factor is

A park factor expresses how much more or less often an event occurs in your stadium relative to a neutral one. A home run factor above 100 means home runs are more common there; below 100 means fewer. The same logic applies to doubles, triples, and overall run scoring.

These are not cosmetic numbers attached to a background image. They feed the simulation on every batted ball hit in your park, in 81 games a year, for both teams.

The asymmetry that creates the edge

Here is the key insight: park factors apply to both teams equally, so they do not automatically help or hurt you. The edge comes from roster construction — you choose your players, your opponents do not choose theirs for your building.

In a home run suppressing park, a fly-ball power hitter loses more value than he would elsewhere, and a ground-ball pitcher gains less than he would elsewhere because the park was already doing that work. In a hitter's park, contact-and-speed profiles are worth less relative to raw power, and control pitchers who limit baserunners are worth more than strikeout arms who allow hard contact.

Building for a pitcher's park

Large dimensions, low home run factor:

  • Prioritize outfield defense heavily. A big outfield means more balls in play stay in play, so range converts directly into runs saved. This is the single largest effect.
  • Value gap power and speed over pure home run power. Doubles and triples factors are often high in the same parks that suppress homers.
  • Buy fly-ball pitchers cheaply. Their weakness is neutralized by your park, and the market prices them on their neutral-park results.
  • Do not overpay for a ground-ball specialist. Your park is already suppressing the damage he prevents.

Building for a hitter's park

Short dimensions, high home run factor:

  • Buy power, including from positions where it is usually expensive. Every marginal point of power is worth more here.
  • Prioritize ground-ball pitchers and control. Keeping the ball on the ground and runners off base matters far more when any fly ball can leave.
  • Discount strikeout pitchers who allow hard contact. Their profile plays worst here and the market will not fully price that.
  • Infield defense over outfield defense, since more balls are hit on the ground by design.

Handedness and asymmetric parks

If your park is asymmetric — one short porch, one deep alley — the effect is handedness-specific. A short right field disproportionately helps left-handed pull hitters and disproportionately hurts your left-handed fly-ball pitchers. When your park is asymmetric, evaluate every acquisition twice: once for the player, once for the handedness fit.

The finance connection

Stadium decisions are not purely competitive. Your building affects attendance and revenue, which affects payroll capacity, which affects the roster. A park that produces exciting high-scoring games and a park that produces efficient run prevention are both viable — but they imply different rosters and different budgets. Decide which one you are building, and then be consistent for several seasons. Flip-flopping means paying full price for players who fit neither plan.

A practical audit

Once per offseason:

1. Open your stadium page and write down your home run, doubles, and overall run factors. 2. List your five most expensive position players. For each, ask whether your park amplifies or suppresses his primary skill. 3. Do the same for your rotation. 4. Any player whose main skill your park suppresses is a trade candidate — his market value elsewhere exceeds his value to you, which is the definition of a good trade.

That last point is the whole strategy in one sentence: park-driven mismatches let you sell high and buy low without predicting the future at all.
